Canton beats Oliver Ames to win division title

The Hockomock League’s Small Division championship went to the top team on Saturday when Oliver Ames defeated Canton 41-13 on Senior Day. This was the first undefeated regular season for Oliver Ames since 1964, and they earned the top seed in the MIAA Div. 3 Southwest Playoffs. The title game was the last regular season game for Oliver Ames, which finished 7-0 overall and 5-0 in the league.

The Bulldogs held a slim lead at halftime when the Canton offense scored an own-goal in the 51st minute. However, in the second half, the Thunderbirds took control of the game, as they covered 54 yards in nine plays, and their possession took 2:38 to complete. Junior running back Joey Tepper scored from four yards out on a scramble that ended with the extra point, closing the gap to 21-7.

While the Bulldogs were unable to score the winning goal, they were able to hold off the Tigers with a resilient defense and an efficient offense. The team was led by the steady play of senior forward Ava Gilmore and sophomores Amy Hylen and Ally McCabe. In the fourth quarter, Canton made four key stops to preserve the lead. In addition to the win against Oliver Ames, the Bulldogs also took home the wild card in the Hockomock Davenport championship crossover tournament.

Oliver Ames returned to action on Tuesday when it traveled to Mansfield. The second half of the double header will feature Canton against Sharon. The winners will advance to the state tournament. They will play for the Division 1 South championship. So, what’s next? Go Bulldogs! And good luck to Oliver Ames! They have earned it! And the championship is in your hands! With one more win in their division, Canton will clinch the title.

The championship game was a true team effort. Five Bulldogs scored touchdowns to lead Canton High School to its first division title in five years. The Patriots Charitable Foundation will donate $1,000 to the Canton High School football program. A great way to celebrate this award! If you are in need of cash, consider donating to a local high school sports program. You can find one here!

With only two games left in the regular season, two teams will advance to the state tournament. Two teams in the Davenport Division are undefeated and Stoughton finished 7-1 in the Small School Division. One big player for the team was Kevin Bui, who scored 12 points against Franklin. He last scored 12 points against Franklin on December 21. And with that, the Hockomock League championship was secured.
